Money raised to help developing countries
CHILDREN throughout Herefordshire
have raised more than £2,000 to help
people in developing countries access
clean water.
Omar Njie, a Gambian development
worker with Hereford-based charity
Concern Universal, visited schools and
colleges to raise awareness of the water
problems facing people in sub-Saharan
Africa.
Pupils at Hampton Dene Primary School
raised almost £700 by collecting pennies
in water bottles.
Mordiford Primary School held a water
bucket relay, raising enough funds to buy
a treadle pump.
Bridstow Primary School students learnt
an African song, complete with
percussion from a giant wooden pestle
and mortar, used in Gambia for pounding
maize.
Elsewhere, secondary schools including
Aylestone, St Mary's and Hereford
Cathedral, took part in geography lessons
on sustainable development.
